Abraxas is a small home based hobby kennel in Sylvania, Ohio.  My dogs are first and foremost cherished family members.  The dogs have the run of the house, sleep on the bed, and have their choice among dozens of toys.  Some people have kids.  I have dogs.

For those who are interested, the word "Abraxas" has many meanings.  In ancient times the word was believed to have magical powers and was inscribed on amulets and charms to give the bearer good luck.  My dogs ARE my good luck.

I have been involved with the sport of purebred dogs for many years.  I got my first Boston Terrier in 2006 and my first show bitch in 2007.  I raise, train and handle my Boston Terriers in AKC Conformation.  I occasionally have puppies and/or adults available to approved homes.

I am a member of the following organizations:
  • Boston Terrier Club of America
  • Doberman Pinscher Club of America
  • National Animal Interest Alliance
  • Responsible Dog Owners of the Eastern States

I am committed to the Boston Terrier breed standard as set forth by the Boston Terrier Club of America.  I perform full health testing on my Bostons, including:
  • BAER - Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response test is used to test the puppy's hearing.  It needs to be performed only once in a dog's life, after 35 days of age.  OFA recommends this test should be performed by a Board Certified Veterinary Neurologist, but will accept results from experienced veterinarians and audiologists.
  • CERF - The Canine Eye Registration Foundation only registers those dog's certified to be free of heritable eye disease.  Certification is good for 1 year from date of exam.  Dogs should be CERF's annually.
  • Patellas - Luxated patellas or "slipped stifles" are a common orthopedic problem in small dogs.  A dog's stifle is equivalent to the human knee. Luxated patellas are a congenital (present at birth) condition. The actual luxation may not be present at birth, but the structural changes which lead to luxation are present.
When purchasing a Boston Terrier please take these health issues into consideration.  Not only will these health issues hinder Boston Terriers in their daily lives, making life quite unpleasant, but corrective surgery is quite costly to treat either the Cataract or Patella. Only purchase a Boston Terrier from a responsible breeder who performs these health tests. Verification of health testing can be obtained from the Canine Health Information Center.  Dogs that are health tested will have a "CHIC" number from this organization.  The extra cost for a puppy because of testing for these problems is well worth it to ensure that you get a healthy dog that will be a beloved family companion for many years.
